Southampton player told to quit St Mary’s with Russell Martin “lack of trust” evident

Russell Martin ignored Joe Lumley during Southampton’s 3-0 victory over Preston North End in midweek.

According to Adrian Clarke, Joe Lumley ought to look for a summer transfer outside of Southampton.

This season, the custodian has been much lower in the Saints’ hierarchy after failing to establish himself in Russell Martin’s starting lineup.

After Gavin Bazunu, the 29-year-old joined the Hampshire team in the summer of last year as a backup option.

However, Martin has encouraged the rookie goalie to stay in goal despite the Irishman facing criticism from teammates.

Furthermore, Lumley is now lower in the team’s hierarchy than Alex McCarthy after the experienced custodian was chosen for Tuesday night’s victory over Preston North End.

Joe Lumley needs to submit the transfer request to Southampton.

After Martin turned Lumley down in the middle of the week, Clarke feels that Lumley ought to be submitting a transfer request.

Due to an injury, Bazunu had to be changed before the game began. The Southampton manager decided to go with McCarthy even though he wasn’t originally included in the matchday roster.

Clarke stated on the What the EFL?! podcast, “If I’m Lumley, transfer request has gone in already.”

“There is blatantly evident mistrust.

“How can you collaborate with a management that treats you like that? It seems excessively severe.

Russell Martin explains the exclusion of Joe Lumley.

Martin gave an explanation for his choice of McCarthy in the wake of the crucial 3-0 victory at St. Mary’s.

The 38-year-old implied that Lumley and McCarthy will be fighting for playing time this weekend against Cardiff City, adding that there is no hierarchy behind Bazunu for who is ranked second.

Martin told the Daily Echo, “I think I’ve said to the goalies of the season, I don’t really see it the same as any other position on the pitch.”

“I believe that in England, and possibly in football generally as well, it’s necessary to have a solid number one or two.

However, it might merely be seen as somewhat different from the outside. I haven’t had a chance to fully explain the choice to Joe.

He will undoubtedly be irritated, wounded, and frustrated, but we will talk to him and let him know why.

“Then, it’s up to him how he responds to that. We’ll find out on Saturday whether or not he plays.”

The Southampton contract status of Joe Lumley

Lumley only signed a one-year contract, so his contract is scheduled to expire at the end of the current campaign.

McCarthy, 29, may or may not stay with the team beyond this season depending on the choice to play him.

This season, he has made four appearances for the Saints, all of which have taken place in the FA Cup.

As the squad looks to advance to the Premier League, Lumley will now have four opportunities to gain playing time in the Championship as Bazunu is out for the duration of the season.

Lumley’s time in Southampton is over.

With the choice to play McCarthy, it appears improbable that Lumley will stay at Southampton for the duration of this season.

It will be fascinating to watch if Martin switches around his keepers in the last few games or if McCarthy is the starting goalie through the end of the season.

Given Bazunu’s position in the team, Lumley was always going to be the backup when he signed with the Saints.

However, McCarthy might be persuaded to move elsewhere for possible playing time after his Southampton contract expires if he finds himself behind him in the hierarchy.
