The Brendan Rodgers pull that could be important for Celtic in the transfer window

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will be hard at work this summer scouring the market for potential new arrivals at Parkhead.

Regarding the public domain, the Bhoys haven’t officially replaced Mark Lawwell and Joe Dudgeon, which could mean the Irishman now has more of a say in recruitment.

Intriguingly, Rodgers directly addressed the transfer process earlier this year, saying: “I’m a part of that process, of course. You’re always thinking short, medium and longer-term, especially when you want to be here for that longer term. I’d love that opportunity to help shape that. I’ve got a lot of experience in the game.”

Mark Cooper has been appointed by Celtic in a full-time capacity as the Bhoys perform a refresh on their recruitment structure. Nevertheless, the manager looks to have a considerable degree of power at this point, which can hopefully be a recipe for success moving forward.

Brendan Rodgers has a pull that can attract players to Celtic

Before we get into the crux of my point, it is far more likely that Celtic reach the heights they want to under Rodgers if he has an active part to play in talent identification.

Managers want players that suit their system, not just individuals who fit a particular recruitment model. Giving him the profile he desires in each position to the best of the club’s ability is the best route to success; I don’t think there is a counter-argument that can outweigh that point.

Now, it is also important to note that Rodgers carries a particular pull for prospective arrivals. He has extensive experience working in the Premier League and a habit of winning trophies in Scotland.

Crucially, his track record in maximising the potential of players is well known. You only need to look at Raheem Sterling, James Maddison and Luis Suarez’s exploits while he was in charge at respective clubs to see my train of thought.

In-house at Celtic, he transformed James Forrest during his first tenure, and brought Kieran Tierney on to another level. Since coming back, Matt O’Riley has flourished under his management, sweeping the table at the Player of the Year awards back in May.

Put simply, he is someone who can elevate the standing of a player in the right circumstances. Rodgers should be given an element of control this window for that reason, and it appears that is the case at present.
