Lawrence Shankland at perfect stage for Rangers transfer as stumbling block dismissed

Derek Ferguson wants to see Rangers bring in Lawrence Shankland because he is at a “perfect age” to thrive at the club.

The Hearts captain has been linked to an Ibrox switch since prior to the last January transfer window, and now has just a year left on his contract at Tynecastle this summer after rejecting extension offers.

Ferguson is a huge fan of the 28-year-old and has dismissed claims that his age means the Scotland striker won’t maintain sell-on value because the other young signings that Philippe Clement has been making this summer will do and the club need a goal-scorer now.

He exclusively told Ibrox News“I love him, I love Lawrence. I’ve watched him since he was 18-19, I’ve watched his career, how he’s struggled at times, went to Ayre United.

“And then the penny dropped in terms of his fitness because there was always a player there.

“When he was let go from Aberdeen, I think it was even Derek McInnes at the time, I think he really liked him but at times with youngsters their mind is elsewhere at times.

“He’s at a perfect age for me, 28. He’s been the captain of Hearts. He’s been outstanding, he knows our game inside out.

“It’s not a gamble. People talk about the sell-on value. Forget about that.

“We’ve got these youngsters that are coming in so they’ll have that resale value, but we need guys that can hit the back of the net.

“In my opinion, if Lawrence Shankland had been playing in a striker role with Rangers this season I think he’d have scored 40-plus goals, honestly.”

Hearts star perfect for Rangers under Philippe Clement

Shankland’s absence from the Jam Tarts’ new kit launch suggested the Edinburgh side might be gearing up for their captain to leave this summer, with him previously having admitted he might be tempted by opportunities available elsewhere.

But developments at Ibrox have gone quiet as the likes of Hamza Igamane and Albion Rramani have emerged as striking targets instead.

There are few better options who have already proven themselves in the Scottish Premiership and Shankland is a boyhood Rangers supporter, so for many it feels like an opportunity which would be too good to miss.
