“Could go” – Milan van Ewijk concern raised if Coventry City don’t get promoted

After years of turmoil, the last couple of seasons have seen Coventry City fight hard to get themselves back to where they belong.

Missing out on promotion by the barest of margins to Luton Town in the 2022-23 season was devastating, but it feels like a return to the Premier League is on the horizon.

A huge part of their resurgence is the smart transfers they have made, with the scouts identifying amazing talents like Viktor Gyökeres, Gustavo Hamer and, more recently, Tatushiro Sakamoto and Milan van Ewijk.

Selling these players on is a natural progression and the financial burden they once struggled with is an issue of the past.

Milan van Ewijk has stunned Coventry fans with his ability

With all this in mind, at Football League World we decided to speak to our resident Coventry City fan pundit, Neil Littlewood, to get his thoughts on what player currently has the highest ceiling at the club.

For Littlewood, there was only one name on his mind, and it was the full-back they signed from SC Heerenveen last summer.

“I think Milan van Ewijk, the boy has got so much potential and his pace is unreal.

“I have already seen people on Twitter from other clubs saying that they would like to sign him – even Dortmund fans. So I think that really goes to show he has got a lot of potential and can go far in the game.”

Speaking about his future at Coventry, Littlewood said: “I feel like we have to get promoted this year otherwise we will lose him because of the model we have got now.

“We’re looking at that Brentford and Peterborough model, where you buy cheap and sell for a profit, so van Ewijk could go.”

Littlewood doesn’t believe van Ewijk is the only one with a lot of potential and gave us some other names who could have a real bright future at a higher level.

“Aside from him (van Ewijk), I think Bobby Thomas will go on and play Premier League football. Haji Wright is an international and has the ability to go higher as well, and finally, Ben Sheaf, who I believe is a Premier League footballer every day of the week.”

Milan van Ewijk the head of Coventry City’s plethora of talent

It’s fair to say that the Sky Blues are not short in the department of up-and-coming players, with several of them in line for a potential move to a more affluent club this summer.

Van-Ewijk has certainly been one of the stars though, and his 12 months in the West Midlands have been nothing short of special. In that time, he has taken on some top-tier wingers like Marcus Rashford in the FA Cup, where he put in a stellar performance and denied the winger any real space.

Displaying his level in the top tier will only benefit the player personally, and you wouldn’t put it past him to make a move to a Premier League side this summer.

But, if he stays at Coventry, his development will continue to skyrocket and the €4 million that the Sky Blues paid for him is looking more of a steal each day.
