Despite qualifying for the Champions League under Unai Emery’s leadership, Aston Villa appears set to lose Douglas Luiz. The star player is reportedly close to joining Juventus, but Dharmesh Sheth exclusively told GIVEMESPORT that the Villans are also close to acquiring Bianconeri youngster Enzo Barrenechea as part of the deal.

Luiz was a crucial member of Villa’s squad, helping them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in forty-one years after they finished fourth in the Premier League. The Brazilian’s skill at the centre of the park allowed players like Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins to have exceptional seasons that helped them become household names in Europe. But, Barrenechea might meet Luiz in route to Turin, as PSR deadlines must be fulfilled following excessive spending.

A few Juventus players caught the attention of the Villans.

Luiz’s interest in joining Juventus and his desire to join the Turin powerhouses were reported earlier this month. After ten years of Italian dominance, they’ve lost their way recently, but with acquisitions like Luiz, they have a good chance of making a run for the top half.

Weston McKennie and Iling-Junior, who is most certainly headed to the Midlands, have been mentioned as Villa’s alternatives because they don’t need to pay the entire amount and Juventus needs to keep the cash charge of the swap agreement low.

Barrenechea’s move to Villa Park has been made possible by the fact that Leeds is no longer considering the American, who struggled while on loan there in the 2022–2023 season.

Sheth: Villa Will Benefit from Juventus’s Decision-Making Patience

Speaking only to GIVEMESPORT, Sheth said that Barrenechea solidified on Villa’s shortlist following the McKennie portion of the agreement stalling, and that an agreement to acquire Iling Jr. had nearly been reached, bringing the transaction down to its last stages.

He declared:

Since then, it has been revealed that Argentine midfielder Enzo Barrenechea is another prospect from Juventus that Aston Villa is considering.

“Then, he and the money may be included in that transaction with Samuel Iling Jr. That would mean Douglas Luiz would go to Juventus and all three of those options—the two players and the money—would go to Aston Villa.

It appears that Luiz will eventually join Juventus as a player given the course of this agreement.

“Samuel Iling Jr, we believe that everything is agreed with Aston Villa so he should become an Aston Villa player.”

Barrenechea May Long-Term Replace Luiz
The Brazilian and Argentine play comparable roles.

As the centre of attention for Villa, Luiz would surely be a major loss, but a move for Barrenechea does provide Emery with more intrigue.

Although Villa have a lot of attacking talent—Moussa Diaby and Bailey are starters—and wide players in Morgan Rodgers, Iling Jr., and Emi Buendia, they lack a lot of defensive midfield danger.

Barrenechea could potentially provide a like-for-like with Luiz, and the Villans may use the remaining funds to get a capable replacement in addition to the two young players they would receive in the trade.
