West Ham confirm latest over Sunderland target as deal winds down

Sunderland target Divin Mubama remains in talks with West Ham over a potential contract extension, the Premier League club has confirmed.

Sunderland are yet to name a new boss but some of those behind the scenes at the Stadium of Light will have eyes on potential summer transfer targets regardless.

Among those frequently linked with a move to Wearside is striker Divin Mubama, whose future at West Ham has been up in the air for some time now.

The 19-year-old has played 18 times for the Hammers’ first-team but having impressed at academy level, he’s determined to find more senior action going forward after only five Premier League appearances in the 2023/24 season.

Now, West Ham have issued an official update over his situation.

As confirmed in their retained list, Sunderland target Mubama remains in discussions with the East London outfit over a possible contract extension.

Waiting on an answer

Sunderland are unlikely to be the only ones keen on Mubama but with discussions seemingly continuing for the time being, those keen will have to wait and see just what the final decision is over his West Ham future.

If he is to remain at the London Stadium, the Black Cats will have to turn elsewhere in their striker hunt.

Mubama looks to be a good fit for the Black Cats as a talented young player with a bright future. On a potential free transfer deal, he would be a very shrewd signing who could earn the club a healthy profit in the years to come.

However, it could be that he’s off the market if he ends up penning a new Hammers deal after continued speculation over his future at the club.

Strikers on the radar

Given Sunderland’s usual recruitment profile, they’ve likely got strikers similar to Mubama on the radar.

The current options up top are younger, unproven players who could yet develop into real assets and Mubama fits that category.

However, there are calls for more experience to be added to the Black Cats’ ranks and a proven option at the top of the pitch certainly wouldn’t go amiss. It would ease the expectation on prospects like Hemir and Nazariy Rusyn.

Time will tell just what comes of Mubama’s situation but Sunderland will be sure to keep a keen eye on further developments as he continues talks with West Ham.
