Rangers ‘interested’ in 6ft 6inch stopper after claims of free transfer agreement

Not a day has passed since the final whistle blew on Rangers season for 2023/24 without a transfer story emerging.

Since the advent of social media, there is an instant resource available to keep up to date that connects the whole world of football.

A new name has emerged in a position that already seemed to be secure for next season with Rangers linked with adding a towering, but up and coming goalkeeper to their squad.

Rangers join the queue for Stojan Lekovic with domestic rival

The only obvious exit will be Jon McLaughlin, despite being a Scotland international, he doesn’t meet UEFA’s home-grown status requirements and, as a result, it’s easy to see why he hasn’t been offered a new contract.

Robby McCrorie has been mentioned as a possible target for Aberdeen with Liam Kelly said to have agreed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers.

Writing on X for fussballeuropa.com, Andre Oechsnar has named Rangers as being interested in signing 6ft 6inch tall Serbian goalkeeper Stojan Lekovic, with Aberdeen also keeping tabs:

“Stojan Lekovic was at the top of list of Werder Bremen, he is one of the best keepers in Serbia.

“Glasgow Rangers and Aberdeen FC are interested in a transfer.

“Lekovic is a real bargain.”

Lekovic has yet to earn any international or age group recognition and is playing for Serbian oufit Radnicki who finished fifth in the Super Liga this season.

What is clear, is that Nils Koppen is casting his next wider than any of his predecessors with transfer links to Argentina, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Hungary and Serbia already.

Clement has addressed Jack Butland exit fears already

The obvious fear with a goalkeeper being linked is that Rangers are preparing for the worst and will listen to bids for Jack Butland.

A concept Philippe Clement has already addressed:

“You can only sell players if you’re sure you can get better for a lower price.

“You can then use the extra money that you have for different positions. That can maybe be a decision.

“But there are also a few players I don’t want to let go for any price.”

When asked if Butland was on that list, Clement said:

“That’s a good example, yes. I think that’s a very important thing for this club.”

Rangers fans aren’t stupid.

They know that if a bid within Rangers valuation of £10-15m comes in for Butland then it would be stupid to turn it down given how the resources could be reinvested into the squad.

The manager will have a budget that he and Koppen will have to work with, however, any money that comes in from sales, should be given straight back to him.

Not that anyone would want to see Butland leave.
