Exclusive:Sunderland Reopen Amad Diallo Transfer

Amad spent 2022/23 season on loan at Black Cats Struggled for first-team minutes under Erik ten HagSunderland  tried to re-sign winger

WHAT HAPPENED?

Amad spent last season on loan at Sunderland, making 42 appearances and scoring 14 goals in the Championship as the Black Cats reached the play-offs. He has not been able to force his way into the plans of Ten Hag, though, as he has made just one appearance in the Premier League totalling 36 minutes. And Sunderland have now confirmed that they did everything they could to bring him back to the Stadium of Light.

WHAT SPEAKMAN SAID

Sunderland’s technical director told Sunderland Nation: “Amad would have been one of those three or four targets [that we were working on] but there are factors we have no control over. I think you’ve seen, first of all, in terms of the market over the January window, it’s been, I think the phrase that’s been commonly used, is it’s been a fairly dormant market.

“There’s not been as many transactions. And ultimately then you’re waiting on player availability most of the time, whether that’s on a permanent basis or a loan basis. It ran its course that he wasn’t available. He’s not turned up anywhere else. We stayed in that for as long as we possibly could. In hindsight you could say that was to the detriment of maybe signing another player earlier on, but we felt that was a choice we had to make and we were comfortable with that choice.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amad joined United to much fanfare in 2021, with the club paying a huge sum of £37m ($47m) for the then-18-year-old. He has since played just 10 senior games for the club, but only four of them have come in the Premier League.
