‘We’ve seen…’ – BBC pundit reacts live on air after Rangers controversy in clash v Celtic

Rangers were perhaps fortunate to not concede a penalty in the first half of their Scottish Cup clash with Celtic, according to James McFadden.

Philippe Clement’s side missed out on their second piece of silverware with a 1-0 defeat at Hampden Park on Saturday (25 May) with Adam Idah’s late winner ensuring the Belgian’s wait for an Old Firm win continues.

Although the Gers fell behind in the second half, they may have been slightly lucky to not concede earlier as BBC Sport pundit McFadden admitted Ben Johnson could have been penalised for a handball inside the area.

Speaking on BBC Sport Scotland (25 May) he said: “I don’t think there’s a lot he can do.

“But we’ve seen them given this season.”

Should Celtic have had a penalty in Old Firm clash v Rangers?

While there was little Davies could do as the ball skidded up onto his arm, the centre-back’s arm was slightly outstretched and on another day he could have given away a spot kick for the incident.

The officiating north of the border this season has been appalling and incredibly inconsistent with referees and VAR officials being panned by fans and pundits alike for their displays in some of the biggest games of the campaign.

Some will claim that there is some sort of agenda that benefits the Gers week in and week out and while this Davies call could reinforce those claims, it would have been incredibly harsh to punish the centre-back for that incident.

While most had expected the former Liverpool man to leave Ibrox this summer after seemingly falling out of favour under the management of Clement, he has stepped up following Connor Goldson’s injury to perform excellently.

Maybe, he might have just managed to force his way back into the fold as Clement looks to put his stamp on this squad.
