These are the pubs we have cherished – and, in most cases, lost. They are the spots we frequented in the 1980s and 1990s before heading off to a night at Ritzy’s, Zhivago’s, The Black Orchid, Rock City or wherever else caught our fancy.

Only one of these venues is still operational – but that doesn’t mean our memories have faded over the years. Well, only slightly.

Of course, there are many others we could have selected as top spots to visit in those two decades – Russells in Shakespeare Street, Cafe Royale in Upper Parliament Street, Jallans in Byard Lane to name just three.

But these 11 pubs below were the ones that we believe truly delivered for a fantastic night out in Nottingham. Take a look at these pictures from a golden era of Nottingham nightlife.

The Aviary, Trent Bridge
Always a convenient pit-stop if you were walking into town from West Bridgford, in 1985 the Town Arms became The Aviary.

Since that pub closed, it has had a number of names including Casa (until 2007) and The Riverbank (from 2010) and now Brewhouse and Kitchen.

Byron’s, North Church Street
Previously known as The Dolphin, this venue’s location made it a popular student pub up until its closure in the 1990s. It was demolished in 2002.
