‘Massive consequences’: Brendan Rodgers makes play-off final claim as Leeds take on Southampton

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says the Championship play-off final has “massive consequences” when asked about the clash between Leeds United and Southampton on Sunday.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on after the Cinch Scottish Premiership match between Celtic FC v St Mirren at Celtic Park Stadium on May 18, ...

Less than a year ago, The 49ers were desperate to bring Rodgers to Elland Road. The Northern Irishman was out of work after being sacked by Championship winners Leicester City, and Leeds were interested.

But, Rodgers did not want to step down into the Championship and instead, he returned to Celtic despite the ill-feeling towards the former Liverpool and Swansea manager when he left Celtic to join Leicester.

At the time, Ally McCoist said he was surprised that Rodgers had rejoined Celtic over a move to Elland Road. But Rodgers has gone on to win the Premiership once again at Celtic, with the chance of a double.

Rodgers has experience of winning the Championship play-offs with Swansea, and he was asked on TalkSPORT about the clash between Leeds and Southampton on Sunday afternoon at Wembley.

Brendan Rodgers talks clash between Leeds and Southampton

Leeds have regained their momentum after two impressive performances against Norwich City in the play-off semi-finals, defensively sound in the first leg and then ruthless in the second clash last week.

Southampton meanwhile got the better of Carlos Corberan’s West Brom in the second leg and there will also be a level of confidence among Saints players, especially having got the better of Leeds twice.

Rodgers told TalkSPORT (Thursday, 8.40AM) that he was delighted for Leicester, and commented on the final: “So happy for Leicester to go up, great club. A shame the club went down, Enzo’s done a great job.

“The other two clubs for the play-offs, I’ve been in that position with Swansea – it’s such a massive game, the consequences of that game are huge. I am sure it will be a really good final,” Rodgers said today.

Graeme Souness and Troy Deeney disagree with Simon Jordan

Plenty of pundits have had their say on the clash, with Graeme Souness and Troy Deeney both agreeing that Leeds go and beat Southampton on Sunday – but on the same podcast, Simon Jordan disagreed.

Ally McCoist was incredibly precise in his prediction, not only foreseeing a Leeds win but for Farke’s men to do it on penalties on Sunday. Gabby Agbonlahor is worried about Farke’s future, if Leeds lose.

The game is the talk of the town at the moment and Leeds will be hoping they can come out victorious, exercising their demons after failing to gain promotion from the play-offs in five previous attempts.
