BBC pundit fires fresh jibe at West Ham fans in new Julen Lopetegui verdict

Garth Crooks has fired a new jibe at West Ham United fans for driving David Moyes out of the London Stadium in a new Julen Lopetegui verdict.

It was announced that the Scotsman and the Hammers would part ways at the end of the Premier League season, with former Real Madrid manager Lopetegui the current frontrunner to replace him.

The prospective appointment has been divisive among supporters and pundits alike, but BBC Sport’s Crooks has urged the Hammers they have to “be careful what you wish for” under their new manager.

Writing for BBC Sport (13 May) he said: “As for Moyes, well, he has departed on good terms and left the club in a far better state than when he arrived.

“The West Ham fans have driven him out and wait to see what Julen Lopetegui can do. Be careful what you wish for.”

Will West Ham United appoint Julen Lopetegui after David Moyes exit?

Every West Ham supporter must be fed up with hearing pundits tell them they should be more grateful for Moyes’ work. Yes, the Scotsman deserves credit for his work, but that doesn’t mean he deserves a brand-new contract.

His football has grown tiring and there is plenty of attacking talent at the London Stadium that a new manager may well be able to do more with. Whether Lopetegui is that man remains to be seen but is a gamble worth taking.

Throughout his career, the former Wolves boss has been successful and while he may not play the most attacking style of football, he is a proven winner. This appointment feels like a natural next step following Moyes’ exit.

It may take time to adapt to a new manager and results could slow down at the start of next season, but that doesn’t mean the Irons have been wrong to part with Moyes.

Hopefully, Lopetegui starts well otherwise these pundits will continue to suggest fans were wrong to want change.
