Southampton expected to reach agreement on summer deal

Southampton loan star Paul Onuachu expects his parent club to reach an agreement with Trabzonspor regarding his future before the transfer window opens, according to reports in Turkey.

The Saints will need to make several decisions on some big-money assets this summer, particularly if the club fail to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, with the first leg of their semi-final taking place later today at The Hawthorns against West Bromwich Albion.

There are a number of players within the Southampton squad and who are out on loan with uncertain futures at the St. Mary’s Stadium. The likes of Carlos Alcaraz, who will remain on loan with Italian giants Juventus until the end of the campaign, and Onuachu, could be sold for decent money this summer.

This will be particularly convenient should Martin’s men remain in the Championship as parachute payments are greatly reduced in the second season following a team’s relegation from the t0p-flight. Alcaraz and Onuachu will be sellable assets to help offset this loss.

It was reported by Turkish outlet Sabah last week that Onuachu is keen to remain at Trabzonspor and has even started getting involved in negotiations between his loan club and Southampton, although other publications in Turkey have claimed that the Karadeniz Fırtınası have given up in their pursuit of the Nigeria international due to the English side refusing to budge on their asking price which is rumoured to be around £10 million.

Nevertheless, Sabah have released a new report stating that the 29-year-old is hoping the Saints will reach an agreement very soon with Trabzonspor over a permanent deal and wants his future resolved before the summer transfer window rolls around in a matter of weeks.

Writer’s View

The issue for Onuachu right now is that he still has two years remaining on his current deal at the St. Mary’s Stadium. Additionally, Southampton paid £18.6 million for the Nigerian last season so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to lose him for half of that 18 months later.

However, if the Saints fail to return to the Premier League, Onuachu is a player they could receive quite a bit of money for and already have a very keen buyer in Trabzonspor. The striker’s future will likely become clearer once the play-offs come to a conclusion.
