Pundit shocked by what Willie Collum did to Rangers man v Celtic

Willie Collum rage at Rangers shocks Sky Sports pundit live during Celtic defeat

Kenny Miller was shocked by how angry Willie Collum was with the Rangers players in their dramatic defeat at Celtic.

The Sky Sports pundit reacted live on the broadcaster’s match coverage on 11 May as the referee bellowed furiously at Mohamed Diomande just before half time of the 2-1 Hoops win.

It came moments after Collum had shown John Lundstram a straight red card after a VAR review of the midfielder’s lunging challenge on Alistair Johnston, with Miller amazed by the temper from the official.

The ex-Rangers and Celtic striker said (1.19pm): “Why is Willie Collum always so angry when he’s talking to players? You know just talk to them. It’s incredible, it’s like he wants to fight the players. You’re allowed to just talk.”

Referee reacts furiously to Mohamed Diomande after John Lundstram red for Rangers at Parkhead

There couldn’t be many complaints about Collum’s decision to upgrade Lundstram’s booking to a sending off in first-half stoppage time, despite Millers’ own insistence that the decision was wrong.

The pundit’s displeasure at the VAR reviewed dismissal may have contributed to his surprise at the referee moments later, although he did appear to be unexpectedly enraged by Diomande for very little.

Collum may have been at the centre of controversy the last time Rangers went to Parkhead and again left with 10 men and a 2-1 defeat on 30 December, for his decision as the VAR to quickly dismiss penalty claims against Johnston.

But, although his decision to award and then uphold a soft second-half penalty for a slight clip by Diomande on Matt O’Riley was potentially debatable, Philippe Clement’s men only had themselves to blame for a loss which surely ends any slim title hopes.

The impressive Jack Butland saved that spot kick to negate any major VAR controversy, as the dismal midfield showing from Lundstram and Diomande, as well as some questionable selection decisions from the manager were the real issues.

Competing against the midfield of O’Riley, Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate looked a key requirement ahead of kick off, but Lundstram, Diomande and Tom Lawrence essentially did nothing of the sort, while the exit-bound former Sheffield United man’s own goal and red card ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Dujon Sterling’s performance, particularly as a makeshift centre-back, highlighted why he probably should have been picked in central midfield, while the decision to start Borna Barisic was debatable.

Another failure by the Light Blues to properly get going until they had already given themselves a mountain to climb cost them as an improved second half showing wasn’t enough to build on Cyriel Dessers’ goal.
