‘Come on’ – BBC pundit stunned as Sterling axe admission emerges ahead of Rangers v Celtic

Lee McCulloch is stunned by Alan Rough’s admission that Dujon Sterling will be dropped for Rangers v Celtic on 11 May.

BBC pundit reacts as Dujon Sterling dropped verdict emerges for Rangers v Celtic

Sterling has been among the first names on the team sheet for Philippe Clement’s side in recent games and has played at left-back, number 10 and right wing.

However, Rough believes that Ross McCausland will come in for the 24-year-old who will not be starting.

He said on PLZ Soccer on 8 May at 30:30: “I would play McCausland. He can give the Celtic defenders a real problem. I wouldn’t play Sterling at all.”

To which McCulloch, a BBC pundit, replied: “You wouldn’t play Sterling at all? Roughie, come on. You wouldn’t play Sterling in the middle or on the left wing or left-back?”

Dujon Sterling has to start for Rangers v Celtic

Rough’s suggestion to drop Sterling for Gers’ crucial match against Celtic has left many fans baffled.

The Englishman has been a consistent performer for Clement’s in recent weeks, playing across various positions and showcasing his versatility.

His inclusion in the starting lineup has been almost automatic, making Rough’s opinion seem out of touch with the player’s current form and importance to the team.

Given the high stakes of the Old Firm derby and Rangers’ need for a victory to keep their title hopes alive, it seems counterintuitive to exclude a player who has been integral to their recent performances.

Sterling’s ability to adapt to different roles on the pitch and his understanding of the team are crucial assets for the visitors in such a pivotal game.

His role will depend on what Clement wants to do as Borna Barisic could be benched which would see Sterling moving to left-back as Ridvan Yilmaz is also not available.
