Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Fiji receive Taekwondo Olympic berths after quota reallocation

After quota spots were reallocated, three nations were given Olympic berths. In the men’s -68 kg division, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea emerged victorious, while Fiji has verified another victory in the women’s -67 kg category.

During the Asian Qualifiers, Alireza Abbasi of the Refugee Team won a spot in the Olympics in the -68kg category. Later, it was decided that he was not qualified to represent the Refugee Team in Paris 2024. Yahya Al-Ghotany, an additional refugee athlete, was given permission to compete in the Olympic Games and would represent his country. Meanwhile, Abbasi’s Olympic berth from the Asian Qualifiers was transferred to Lu Wai Fung of Hong Kong, who was defeated by Abbasi in the Qualifiers semifinals.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) did not sanction the participation of, hence the other two berths were redistributed.

the two Taekwondo competitors from New Zealand who secured spots at the Oceania Qualifiers.

Kevin Kassman (-68 kg) of Papua New Guinea lost to Eisa Mozhdeh of New Zealand in the qualifying tournament final, although Kassman will now compete at the Olympics after Mozhdeh’s license was denied by the NZOC because of governance concerns.

Jemesa Landers’ driver’s license had the same outcome. The Olympic spot will go to Lolohea Navuga Naitasi of Fiji, who was defeated by Landers in the women’s 67kg final.

Having qualified for the Olympics previously in the Oceania Qualifiers, Papua New Guinea and Fiji were awarded their second Olympic berths. This is Hong Kong’s lone license to compete in the Paris 2024 Taekwondo tournament.
