‘Unbelievable’ Rangers youth sensation trains with first team at Auchenhowie – report

Rangers Academy’s hero of the moment has been training with Philippe Clement’s first team, according to the Daily Record.

Mason Munn trains with Rangers first team amid 'unbelievable' events

It tells on page 50 of their Friday edition [May 3] that teenage goalkeeper Mason Munn has been training with the club’s first-team squad at Auchenhowie.

Munn recently made headlines for what BBC Scotland pundit Richard Foster described as an “unbelievable save” to help the Gers see out a 2-1 lead over Aberdeen to win the Scottish Youth Cup.

The club’s number one, Jack Butland, has been linked with the exit door at Ibrox just one season into a four-year contract.

Amid long-term uncertainty over Clement’s goalkeeping options to pick up pace this summer, 18-year-old Munn is showing early promise that he could be the answer.

Could Munn be Rangers number one?

I’ll firstly say is that it’s clearly early days.

The Northern Ireland youth international is just enjoying his football and doing what he does best.

Munn outlined his personal progression after the game, stating that in last year’s final, his family travelled only for him not to play. This was a particular cornerstone for the young man.

It’s always an intriguing debate with goalkeepers, regarding when they’re ready for regular first-team football.

The argument from some is that, with time on their side and many stoppers playing well into their late thirties, there is no rush for their development.

But you’ve seen with many ‘keepers that one breakthrough is all they need to flourish – and Munn’s potential predecessor Butland, who made his senior EFL debut at the same age, is a prime example.

Munn would right now be considered the fourth-choice at Ibrox, but Clement may shuffle his pack as at least one goalkeeper is expected to seek pastures new. His performance in the final could be the sliding doors moment.
