Hugh MacDonald slams ‘Dangerous’ Rangers & Celtic incidents, calls for arrests to be made

Hugh MacDonald has slammed the Rangers fans who decided to throw bottles onto the pitch during the game against Celtic on 7 April.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on Thursday (11 April), the Herald journalist said the incidents are coming from the same place after Hoops midfielder Matt O’Riley had an object thrown at him from the right-hand side of the goal, where keeper Joe Hart previously faced a similar issue at Ibrox.

He added that you would like to think there is CCTV in place to allow the police to make almost immediate arrests because it’s “so dangerous”.

“The incidents are coming from just behind the goal on the right-hand side,” said MacDonald. “That’s where the Hart thing presumably came from and that’s where the glass bottle at Matt O’Riley came from.

“The other one is obviously behind the Celtic dugout. There have been two incidents now behind there, the Kennedy one and a physio or doctor got smashed.

“You would like to think that they’ve got CCTV and can make almost immediate arrests because it’s so dangerous.”

Rangers must stop bottle-throwing incidents

It’s completely ridiculous for so-called fans to be throwing glass bottles at players and members of staff, no matter which team they represent.

While tensions are always high in the Old Firm games, there is simply no excuse for anyone to be targeted in such a way as it’s incredibly dangerous.

Rangers will no doubt be looking to ensure these incidents don’t happen again, with the police looking to come down hard on the perpetrators.

Let’s be honest, no real fan turns up to a game and decides in the moment to throw a glass bottle at another person, it’s a predetermined action by someone who doesn’t belong in a football ground.

It’s a shame incidents like this are even a talking point after what was an incredible game of football between two sides battling it out for the title.
