Two West Ham stars ruled out as David Moyes shares injury latest ahead of Leverkusen clash

West Ham United manager David Moyes has confirmed that both Jarrod Bowen and Kalvin Phillips will miss the Irons’ clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Hammers face Xabi Alonso’s side in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday (11 April) as they look to end the Bundesliga side’s unbeaten streak and bring a lead back to the London Stadium.

However, the Irons will be without both Bowen and Phillips and Moyes has admitted that he isn’t yet able to put a timescale on either player’s return, despite insisting Phillips’ issue isn’t a long-term problem.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference (10 April) he said: “Jarrod isn’t with us, he’s twisted his knee and there’s some sort of damage. We can’t give any dates of when he might be back, unfortunately.

“Kalvin Phillips has picked up a problem and will be missing tomorrow. It looks like he’s tweaked his hamstring a bit, but we don’t think it’s a long-term problem.”

Will Jarrod Bowen and Kalvin Phillips play for West Ham against Leverkusen?

Various reports over the last few days had made it obvious that Bowen was likely going to miss the Hammers’ European clash with Leverkusen, but it is a worry that Moyes isn’t yet able to say how long he’ll be sidelined.

The English international has been a key part of the Scotsman’s team throughout his tenure at the London Stadium and it will be a massive blow both in Europe and domestically if he missed the remainder of the run-in.

Phillips’ absence is less of an issue for the Irons given his slow start to his career at West Ham, but Moyes has put a lot of faith in the Manchester City loanee and it wouldn’t have been a shock to see him feature in Germany.
Hopefully, both players will make a quick recovery and be fit and available sooner rather than later. Until then, the Hammers boss will just have to hope that he has enough quality at his disposal to somehow put an end to Leverkusen’s winning streak.
