The announcement in recent days that chief operating officer (COO) Steve Davison would be leaving Sunderland at the conclusion of the season marked a significant departure.

Having taken over the club’s promotion to the Championship in 2022, Davison had been at the Stadium of Light since the conclusion of the 2020–21 season.

Though they lost to eventual play-off winners Luton Town in the play-offs, the Black Cats were a rising team who enjoyed a great season overall, especially as it was their first at the Championship level since 2017–18.

But Sunderland’s season hasn’t gone well, and the decision to replace Tony Mowbray in December was a disastrous one that left the team with Mike Dodds leading them into mid-table mediocrity following Michael Beale’s disastrous tenure.

Davison is responsible for handling off-field issues, which have also angered supporters. This reached a breaking point in January when Sunderland decked out one of their home bars in Newcastle United colours in advance of an FA Cup matchup with their fierce rivals.

It makes sense that this wasn’t warmly received, and things haven’t been well at the Stadium of Light lately.

Steve Davison’s exit doesn’t surprise Sunderland fan commentator

Sunderland's Stadium of Light

Although Steve Davison cannot be held accountable for events that occur on the pitch because he is not in charge of football-related things, he is in charge of non-football-related matters.

Positive developments included managing the women’s team’s progress to the Championship and securing Women’s Rugby World Cup activity at the stadium in 2025. He has also contributed to the advancement of international women’s football to the Stadium of Light.

Although this generate income for the team, the Black Cats Bar scandal that occurred before the Newcastle United game has left a terrible taste in the mouths of supporters.

Our Sunderland supporter analyst, Jack Austwicke, stated in an interview with FLW: “I think we could all see coming after the whole thing with the derby; he was probably at the centre of that. Steve Davison leaving.”

“I am aware that the club has documented his accomplishments and paid a lovely homage to him in the statement, but this is unquestionably the right decision, and since he is supposedly a Newcastle supporter, you don’t want him working for Sunderland FC.

“He’s accomplished some good things, and we’ve made progress off the pitch, but there have also been some really bad things.

“There’s not a lot of emotion surrounding it, but many people are relieved to see him go because of the more recent negative events.”

For Sunderland, the summer is going to be exciting.

After the recent occurrences, Sunderland’s supporters are justifiably angry and need to get their act together in the summer.

The disgraceful 5-1 home loss to Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday demonstrated how urgently things at the team need to change.

For Sunderland, the selection of a new manager is crucial, and they must select a candidate who can win over the fans after a difficult few months.

Due to the season’s failure to live up to expectations, supporters of Sunderland, who are a major team, had reasonable high expectations.

But the Black Cats will have a new beginning in 2024–2025, therefore they must move past a disappointing few months.

Sunderland must make some important decisions and cannot afford to ignore its devoted supporters any longer.
