Vatunitusiqila’s Big Dreams and Determination

One of the main duties of being the oldest person in the family is to serve as an example for your younger siblings. Sakiusa Vatunitusiqila’s ambition of one day representing his family in the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s and Fiji Water Flying Fijians by donning the white jersey is a reality.

This year’s Skipper Cup competition has seen the modest and committed young guy from Lomani Koro, Bau, Tailevu, play a significant role for the Suva team as a utility backline player. Due to his expertise and perseverance, he has also been selected by national 7s selectors, where he will remain in the non-traveling reserves for the duration of the HSBC SVNS competitions.

Vatunitusiqila muses on his introduction to the sport as he waits to don the national jersey: “I played soccer in elementary school, but I started playing rugby when I was in form 5 at Dudley High School.”

“My motivation for every game comes from remembering that I am playing the sport I love for my family, especially my parents, whenever I run onto the field.”

When asked how he manages and balances the two codes, he responds that it all comes down to mentality and game management.

Vatunitusiqila, a potential national representative who hopes to represent his country at the Olympics and Rugby World Cup, is also a graduate of the Fiji Rugby High Performance Unit’s Elite Player Pathway.

This young man is really skilled and ambitious, and Suva Rugby is lucky to have him playing for them this weekend against Namosi in Round 6 of the Skipper Cup competition.
