Ferguson confused by Rangers star’s role and says Clement has ‘got in his head’

Ferguson, a former Light Blues midfielder, shared his opinions on Nigerian attacker Cyriel Dessers.

Ex-Rangers star Derek Ferguson

Derek Ferguson concedes he understands the annoyance Rangers supporters feel towards Cyriel Dessers.

Despite splitting the Ibrox fanbase since leaving Cremonese for a £4.5 million summer move, the Nigerian striker scored an incredible 17 goals in his debut season across all competitions. The much-maligned Dessers needed some time to get on the scoreboard at Rangers, but after Philippe Clement joined, he improved.

Ferguson is still unclear of the 29-year-old’s striker classification, despite the fact that he will start this weekend as the starting custodian against Celtic in an attempt to snap his Old Firm goal drought. “After playing with some quality strikers, you know that if you get space in the box, it’s about one and two-touch finishes,” the former Gers midfielder stated. The thing that irritates me about Dessers is that he constantly wants to take that third or fourth touch.

“He fluctuates in his performance, but he still has 13 goals in the league. Clement has an internal conflict, although he hasn’t revealed it too much if he feels pressure. I have no idea what Dessers is in specific terms. Does he control the channels, or is he a target man? He’s by no means a guaranteed finisher.

“He’s a bit of a mixed bag; sometimes you wonder where he’s heading when he makes runs. Although it ought to come naturally to him, he appears to be in need of coaching.”
