Rangers must ask more questions of SPFL after controversial image emerges

Rangers must ask more questions of Scottish officials as controversial image emerges v Hibs

Rangers need to further investigate the quality of Scottish officiating after a video of Scott Wright’s goal against Hibernian was disallowed went viral.

Rangers had to endure another lengthy VAR check to determine whether to disallow the rebound goal when it was determined that Wright had encroached. This was after a protracted review to award the penalty in the first place.

It will be debatable, though, how Wright could have been perceived to be invading the penalty area in a picture that Four Lads Had A Dream posted on X.

Although Philippe Clement’s team won 3-1 in the end, the extended usage of VAR will once more draw attention to the calls made by the referees at Ibrox.

Whether it’s at Ibrox or somewhere else this season, Clement’s club has been subjected to a number of contentious calls that have gone against them. This is only the most recent in a long line of calls made by the Scottish authorities.

This season, referees have been extremely important to Rangers in particular. Willie Collum and Alan Muir have both drawn criticism for their questionable calls against the Ibrox club, with some even suggesting Collum should not be allowed to officiate Rangers games.

The most recent instance of their frustration came when referee Don Robertson arrived at the game after the Rangers squad, leaving Chris Sutton furious, and abruptly called off the SPFL match against Dundee at Dens Park with less than two hours’ notice.

Following the revelation that SPFL referees are not required to disclose which team they support, Sutton recently talked about what he called “conspiracy theories.” This raised the prospect that a Celtics supporter would officiate a Rangers game, and vice versa.
Undoubtedly, calls that have gone against Rangers this season—whether they are merely dubious, as the one against Hibs, or flat-out wrong, as the one at Celtic Park—have added to the fans’ discontent.
