Sunderland to implement ‘top-quality’ Boca Juniors style floodlights as part of Stadium of Light revamp

This summer, Sunderland will be using a new illumination system at the Stadium of Light, one that has been utilised by teams in Germany and Argentina.

The Stadium of Light is slated for renovation this summer, and Sunderland AFC plans to install a ‘top-quality’ new illumination system that has been used by teams like Boca Juniors inside the venue.

The Stadium of Light will see several upgrades this month, the Black Cats announced via social media, with owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus promising ‘lasting benefits’ for fans. This will be the stadium’s largest investment in more than 20 years, the club said.

When the stadium changes were announced on March 19, Louis-Dreyfus stated, “These upgrades signify a dramatic shift in our approach to matchday experience and each development will bring lasting benefits to our loyal supporters.”

The club said that 3,000 safe-standing places would be implemented as part of the redevelopment, along with new floodlights, undersoil heating, and an upgraded PA system. Now, we can confirm that Sunderland will install brand-new LED floodlights from Thorn Lighting.

Thorn Lighting has partnered with Mainz of the German Bundesliga to enhance the lighting at their 34,000-seat Mewa Arena, which is identical to the technology used at Estadio Alberto José Armando, home of Argentina’s biggest team, Boca Juniors. There’s a claim that the new Thorn Atlis floodlights provide ‘high quality, future-proof lighting’.

“Customised illumination systems for virtually all types of indoor and outdoor facilities – from large-scale stadiums and event arenas to small-scale practice fields” is the area of expertise for Thorn Lighting, according to their website. The fresh lighting system will provide “modern lighting solutions are designed for low energy consumption and easy maintenance as well as aesthetics and optical performance, highlighting the action on the pitch and the stadium experience as a whole” .
