Gareth Baber: Cardiff Met director of rugby to rejoin Fiji for Paris Olympics

Re-assigned to head Fiji’s sevens squad for the summer Olympics in Paris is Gareth Baber.

The former scrum-half for Dragons and Pontypridd, now a coach for Cardiff, guided Fiji to gold at the last Games in Tokyo.

Baber will stay in his current position as director of rugby systems at Cardiff Metropolitan University and resume his connection with Fiji.

“I am deeply honoured to take on this role with Fiji Rugby,” Baber stated.

“I am grateful to Cardiff Metropolitan University for their unwavering support and encouragement, and I’m excited to represent both Fiji and Cardiff Met on the global stage.”

After a 27–12 victory over New Zealand in the championship match, Baber guided Fiji to just their second Olympic Gold medal in history three years ago in the Tokyo Games.

Baber left his position as Fiji’s head coach after the Covid-related Games in Japan. He then joined Edinburgh as an assistant coach for skills and attacks before relocating to Cardiff Met the previous year.
