Southampton must now take transfer action over 29-year-old following recent comments – opinion

In January, Southampton only entered into deals with one other club regarding new first-team acquisitions.

Russell Martin recruited two players from the Premier League team, Bournemouth, to his roster.

Two players who transferred to St. Mary’s were midfielder Joe Rothwell and winger David Brooks.

However, given that they signed loan agreements that would only last until the end of the season, there may be concerns regarding their prospects beyond the summer.

Still, Rothwell has provided some indication of his potential future at Southampton.

Summertime hint from Joe Rothwell

The midfield player was recently questioned about whether he would continue to play for St. Mary’s beyond this season.

That sounds like a step Rothwell would be open to taking. In response, he stated he would be “massively open to” moving to Southampton.

He stated that if it turns out that his time at Bournemouth is up, that would be a possibility for him.

It is a position Southampton could want to make sure they are prepared to take advantage of given the conditions.

Since moving to St. Mary’s, Rothwell hasn’t exactly established himself as a mainstay in the starting lineup, to be honest.

Despite this, he has had some significant effects for the team. He has came off the bench to score game-winning braces not once, but twice.

Those have made a significant contribution to Southampton’s continued participation in the promotion battle.

In fact, while playing for the Saints, Rothwell has a mere 1.52 Expected Goals total, according SofaScore.

That demonstrates his ability to create something useful for this team out of very little.

Regardless of the division Southampton plays in, having a guy capable of that could be essential.

The midfielder has a 92% pass completion percentage and has already established a strong rapport with his teammates, so there are more reasons why St. Mary’s could benefit from having him around.

He appears to have adapted fairly well here, which may give Southampton fans hope that he can perform better in the Premier League than he did for Bournemouth.

The fact that he only started three league games before to being granted permission to go on loan in the summer raises the possibility that he won’t be playing for the Cherries for very long.

It’s also important to remember that, with Tyler Adams having returned to the team following a season-long injury, Rothwell may have an even harder time breaking through Andoni Iraola’s lineup when he rejoins in the summer.

The former Leeds United player may be chosen over Rothwell as a center-of-the-park alternative because he was outstanding in the premier league the previous season.

This could therefore indicate that Bournemouth is prepared to let Rothwell leave once more come summertime. The midfielder made some remarks here, so Southampton could want to be prepared to capitalise on that.
