Ben Gollings sacked by Fiji Sevens 4 months out from Olympics

Four months before the Olympics, Fiji Rugby announced a significant reorganisation of their sevens rugby coaching team, firing head coach Ben Gollings.Fiji 7s to uplift performance from Hong Kong - GollingsThe decision was made in response to a run of dismal Fijian HSBC SVNS circuit results, which included an unexpected loss to Spain.

The decision is hardly shocking considering that Gollings has been the target of growing criticism in Fiji since the season began, with the country’s attorney general, Siromi Turaga, rebuking the actor earlier this week.

The decision to release Gollings was deemed difficult by Fiji Rugby Chairman Peter Mazey, who emphasised the importance of winning Olympic medals for Fiji in sevens rugby.

“With sorrowful hearts, we say goodbye to Ben Gollings. Although his commitment and hard work are admirable, we must put our ultimate objective of winning medals for Fiji in sevens rugby at the Summer Olympics first,” Mazey said.

Osea Kolinisau is the new head coach of Fiji Rugby. Kolinisau, who won praise for leading Fiji to its first gold medal in the Olympics, is anticipated to lead the team as they attempt to retain their Olympic crown.

“We are certain that our new coach will offer the strategic direction, leadership, and guidance required to improve our sevens rugby team’s performance and set Fiji up for success at the Summer Olympics,” Mazey continued.

Experienced strength and conditioning coach Ian Gibbons and consultant Naca Cawanibuka will assist the new coach.

Following Kolinisau’s official declaration of interest in December, Fiji made the decision to hire him, stressing that the decision was well-thought out and unaffected by other forces.

Additionally, the organisation said that it was going to develop a post called “Director of 7s Rugby,” with rugby greats like Waisele Serevi, Gareth Barber, and Ben Ryan being considered for it.

Players and staff from Fiji Rugby met this morning with the management and board, who assured them of their full support as they get ready for the forthcoming 7s series and the Olympics.
