Celtic January target says he couldn’t avoid links to Parkhead; he’s keen on a new challenge

In January, Celtic added two players, however they were disappointed that more players weren’t signed at Parkhead.

Adam Idah and Nicolas Kuhn arrived from Norwich City and Rapid Vienna, the former at an estimated expense of £3 million.

To the astonishment of many fans, though, it has been the latter who has made a greater impact in green and white, tallying five goals and dishing out just one assist in his first seven games [Transfermarkt].

Though he wasn’t the only striker discussed in relation to Celtic during the mid-season transfer window, the Republic of Ireland international has given Kyogo Furuhashi some real fight for his spot in the lineup.

Bojan Miovski of Aberdeen, Sydney van Hooijdonk, a Norwich City loanee, and Lawrence Shankland of Heart of Midlothian were mentioned in media circles; however, nothing materialized.

Since last summer, there have been rumors around Brondby attacker Mathias Kvistgaarden. According to Football Scotland, there were last-ditch efforts in January to try to lure the 21-year-old to Glasgow’s east end.

As part of Brendan Rodgers’ efforts to expand his alternatives in the final third, the Hoops also had a £4 million bid for the Denmark Under-21 international rejected at the beginning of this season.
Mathias Kvistgaarden discusses the rumors surrounding the Celtic deal.

Kvistgaarden said in an open interview that he was unable to block rumors about a possible transfer to Parkhead in the previous window.

He has also stated that, at some point in the future, he is eager to look for a new challenge outside of Brondby, but for the time being, he is totally focused on the happenings in his native country.

As Kvistgaarden stated to Tipsbladet, the month was extremely calm. As a player, I’m not interested in learning a lot about current events. All I want to focus on is playing football.

He went on to discuss Celtic-related rumors, saying, “Well, I’ve read the headlines.” I skipped over the articles. I was just scrolling around social media when they suddenly appeared. I therefore couldn’t help but notice that there would occasionally be a photo of me followed by a Celtic-related sentence.I was not very good at that a few years back. I read a lot of what was written about me back then. I’ve improved a lot at letting stuff go. I get no benefit from reading such material.

“I haven’t spoken with them yet. Obviously, traveling overseas is the dream at some point. Although that’s every player’s desire, I don’t want to discuss it right now. I have a season left to play and am sitting here wearing a Brøndby jersey. I’m not bothered by it, therefore.

For me, coming all the way from the kids section, that would be an added advantage. Without a doubt, this club helped shape me into the football player I am today, thus I would like to give them back by obtaining a competitive transfer fee.

Celtic must decide what steps to take in their summer transfer window.
Idah has performed above expectations at Parkhead, and Celtic must make some interesting choices over their summer transfer activity.

Ireland-based publications claim that if the Bhoys attempt to sign the Cork native permanently, he might be available for a price above £3 million.

However, if we look to the long term, Kvistgaarden is another intriguing alternative that Rodgers may be considering. His numbers are encouraging, as he has eight goals and seven assists in 23 appearances this season [Transfermarkt].

The Birkerod native has proven in the Danish Superliga that he can consistently create opportunities for his teammates, setting up six huge opportunities in 2023–2024 [Sofascore].

It will be interesting to watch where Celtic goes with their recruitment strategy once the window opens for business.
