On a contentious day at Tynecastle, there were three main points of contention as ten-man Celtic lost 2-0 and wasted the opportunity to pass Rangers. The first significant call came on minute eleven, when Alex Cochrane caught the Hearts defender on his blindsight and tripped Yang inside the area. To the indignation of the Jambos, referee Robertson pointed to the spot right away; however, Adam Idah was unable to convert, and Zander Clark made a boot stop.

Shortly after, Yang and Cochrane had another altercation when the Celtic winger’s high boot hit his opponent’s shoulder. After being called over to the VAR monitor, Robertson altered his mind and brandished a red card, which resulted in a swift yellow card. The fact that the Celts had to play with 10 men for the most of the afternoon marked a significant turning point in the game.
After that, VAR referee John Beaton got involved once more when he saw Tomoki Iwata handball, which prompted on-field whistler Robertson to review the play. As Iwata turned to face his opponent, the Japanese midfielder leaped into the air for an aerial duel but was pushed off balance by teammate Alistair Johnston. The ball then fell on his arm. Jorge Grant stepped up and ended the tie from the penalty spot after Robertson severely declared it deserving of a penalty.
After an earlier goal was narrowly disallowed for offside, Lawrence Shankland finally put the game to bed later in the second half, dealing the Hoops yet another brutal blow. At full time, Parkhead manager Brendan Rodgers let out his ire, accusing the referees of costing his team the match. Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, has now weighed in on all of the major topics on this morning’s Ref Watch.
