THE RUN-IN has begun, and on Saturday, Leeds United received a preview of what’s to come.

Daniel Farke, an experienced Championship operator, believes as much. On a derby day, his squad, which was expected to rise, was pushed back by a Huddersfield Town team that had all the characteristics necessary to avoid relegation.

After captain Jonathan Hogg was sent out just before halftime, Town had to play the whole second half with 10 men, but they still shown the necessary effort, fortitude, and cohesion to become the first team to stop Leeds from taking three points so far in 2024.

Leeds, chasing a club record tenth straight league victory, were forced to settle for a draw after a goal from fit-again defender Michal Helik just before the half was cancelled out by Patrick Bamford’s strike halfway through the second half. This was Helik’s ninth goal of the season.

Huddersfield earned their just desserts after playing well in Andre Breitenreiter’s first home game as manager. After the highs against Leicester City on a day where rivals Southampton and Ipswich Town both triumphed, Leeds had some reflection time. They are currently in third place.

“Out of the 35 games we have played, 25 have been played like this and on many occasions, we have won such a game,” Farke said of his team, which hosts Stoke City on Tuesday night.

That’s how football works. Accepting your opponent’s traits, mindset, and fighting spirit is sometimes necessary, as is acknowledging when you aren’t having the best day.

“On any other day, we would have emerged victorious from these circumstances and everyone would have talked about a close, hard-fought victory. But a draw has to be accepted.

“We anticipate that there will be more games like this in the future. We’ve shown in recent weeks that we are more than capable of winning these kinds of games, so I have no concerns. But there’s no assurance.

“It’s necessary to grind out outcomes. We’ve performed incredibly well in the last several weeks, so we’ll keep going and let the table take care of itself.

“We want to win as many points as we can and then we’ll see where we finish. We can’t control any other results.”

Town’s overall performance suggested that, if they repeat Saturday’s effort, they should avoid problems at the wrong end of the table even though their results elsewhere went against them.

“This game was different from last week and the situation was, but it worked,” Breitenreiter remarked.

“You need extreme discipline when you play against a team that is that excellent and full of conviction and belief. The entire team is involved, not just one or two players.

“The mindset was crucial, and in this circumstance, it is necessary. We need more games like this, even though we are unblemished after two games.

“It was wonderful, and I felt quite welcomed. We were all together as a club, and the lads benefited much from the amazing energy, feelings, and supporters. We must remain a unit.

On Wednesday, Huddersfield, who were soundly defeated 4-1 at Elland Road in the rematch, will pay a visit to Cardiff City.
