The Celtic irony facing Mark Lawwell as 3 theories emerge over timeline of hasty Parkhead departure

On Friday, the Scottish champions announced the placement of their head of recruitment on gardening leave. Many fans were taken aback by Mark Lawwell’s abrupt resignation as Celtic’s head of first-team recruitment.

Though Simon Donnelly conceded there might be a tinge of irony in the final run-in amid criticism of his recent recruits, Celtic heroes Peter Grant and Simon Lawwell had their own thoughts about why Peter Lawwell’s son quit from his role in the middle of a Scottish Premiership title fight. Scrutiny on Lawwell has increased as a result of Brendan Rodgers’ team behind Rangers in the table and the additions from the prior two windows failing to have a significant impact.

Former Parkhead striker Donnelly believes that the Hoops’ announcement of Lawwell’s and Celtic’s main first team scout Joe Dudgeon’s placement on gardening leave may have been made to make room for an early arrival of a successor. Additionally, he believes that the departure might make it possible for the Scottish champions to try their luck in fresh transfer markets this summer.

However, Donnelly believes that by the time the season ends, Celtic fans may be thanking the departing transfer expert because Yang and Adam Idah are playing well. “I thought the timing was maybe giving whoever the person is that is coming in a bit of time,” he said to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard.

“It’s another important window, but from a Celtic perspective, they will be aiming to go and maintain the title. Reading a list of all the players is not a smart idea. There hasn’t been much achievement in that area.

The irony is that, while I’m not suggesting Yang and Idah are the whole solution, they have been incredibly helpful. Most supporters, in my opinion, would have anticipated much more from that transfer window. Although it was a quiet window, perhaps that was the intention—to draw in new customers and try out alternate routes.”

Grant told Go Radio that if Lawwell was preparing to leave in the summer, the club might not want him laying the groundwork for the upcoming campaign, even if he acknowledged being surprised by the timing. “I think the timing is very surprising,” he remarked. I had assumed they would stay until the conclusion of the season.

It doesn’t matter if you win the league or anything else; you just need to make sure that the person in charge of implementation will still be around. Thus, I can also comprehend that aspect of it.”
