Skipper Cup Round 2: Battle of the 2 Cities

This Saturday’s Skipper Cup game in Lautoka’s Churchill Park will pit Suva against a strong Lautoka team. Suva is ready for battle.

After being tested by Ba last weekend in what ended up being a technical victory for Suva after the newcomers were fined for breaking the competition’s commercial standards, the capital city team will enter this highly anticipated match without any injuries.

The men from Sugar City will not be taken lightly, according to Suva Coach Solomone Nute, following their outstanding performance at Prince Charles Park last week against Nadi.

“Lautoka established themselves in the competition after their opening round of the Skipper competition against Nadi, taking the home team to the wire only to fall short 24 points to 28 to the JetSet team,” Nute stated.

Suva The reigning champions are still overjoyed about their victory from the previous year and are carrying that good vibe into this year’s contest. They have ten players from their victorious Under-20 squad from 2023 in addition to some returning senior players with experience who won the cup at the Laucala Bay Grand Final the previous year.

“With the aim of keeping the cup and adding the Inkk Farebrother Cup to our collection, we have some young players coming through the High-Performance Unit, the Fiji Warriors setup, and some Fijian Drua development players joining our senior team this year.”

Coach Penione Nanitu of Lautoka reported that the young Maroons had a successful off-season to get ready for their participation in the Skipper Cup this year and that they fared well against Nadi, the Inkk Farebrother Champions and previous year’s finalist in the competition.

According to Nanitu, “We have kept reminding the team that they need to be playing at a higher standard because this is a different level of competition than the Vodafone Vanua Cup.”
