‘Madness’ – Sky Sports pundit rages after ‘Dangerous’ incident in Leeds v Hudder…

Andy Hinchcliffe was absolutely furious with Huddersfield defender Jonathan Hogg after his red card against Leeds United.Jonathan Hogg Archives - MOT Leeds NewsThe Huddersfield ace was shown a second yellow card after a high elbow caught Junior Firpo in the fact on the stroke of half-time, with the visitors having just fallen 1-0 down in the game.

And after watching the replay while on commentary for Sky Sports (2 March, 13:20), Hinchcliffe called the incident “madness” and “dangerous” while suggesting that he knew exactly what he was doing.

“It’s a raised arm from Jonathan Hogg, for such an experienced campaigner I’m really surprised if it is,” he said.

“The last thing you want to do is get a man sent off unnecessarily. You can see he just leans into Firpo with that left arm, he knows what he’s doing for me. That’s not accidental. He sees Firpo, raises the arm, has a little look at him. You can’t do that. You’re on a yellow as well. It’s madness.”

“I’m sure Jonathan Hogg will say he’s protecting himself, he’s raising that arm to protect himself but for me he isn’t. It’s dangerous. He’s raising that left arm up into the face of Firpo.”

Dirty Leeds United?

There’s that old saying about Leeds being a dirty team, but what Hogg did in that incident was just pure nastiness and intentional.

While there wasn’t any real force behind the elbow he landed, it was clear that he was trying to use it to put Firpo off going for the ball by essentially threatening him with the contact and that’s what happened.

It was the right decision from the referee to send him off, but you could easily argue that it should have been a straight red card for Hogg rather than a second yellow.

Either way his stupidity eventually cost his team as Leeds recovered during the half-time break and then dominated the second half to come back and earn a draw thanks to Patrick Bamford’s strike.

Well done to Hinchcliffe for calling it out for what it was, because most people would have tried to give the player the benefit of the doubt. But everyone knew what he was doing, including Hogg. It was just nasty.
