Fiji U-20 roars to victory over Tonga

In Auckland, the Fiji Under-20 team defeated Tonga 39–25 to begin their Oceania Rugby Championships campaign.Ebenezer Navula capitalised on a defensive blunder near Tonga’s tryline to score the first try and give Fiji the lead.

The extra points from Ponipate Tuberi’s successful convert gave them an early 7-0 advantage.

Rupeni Nakiyoyo’s pushover touchdown, scored from a scrum five metres from the tryline, gave Fiji even more of a lead.

Sivaniolo Lumelume’s incredible individual effort saw him break through 22 metres from the scoreline and then easily dodge the Junior Ikale Tahi defence for another try.

Avakuki Niusalelekitoga scored Fiji’s third try shortly after, taking advantage of a mistake made by Tonga, who was also attempting to cross the tryline.

Just before halftime, Sikeli Basiyalo’s skillfully performed long-range throw set up Uluibau for another try, extending Fiji’s advantage to 29-3.

Tuberi added to Fiji’s remarkable total when he successfully converted the try.

Siosifa Tohi, the captain, scored Tonga’s first try of the game, followed by three more unanswered tries in the first ten minutes of the second half. Paulo Afemui then added another try, and Peni Taffa sealed the victory with five more points, making the final score 29–22. The Fijians were taken aback by Tonga’s remarkable turnaround.
Halfback Philip Baselala’s successful conversion of a penalty kick gave Fiji a 32–22 lead.

In the 31st minute, Netava Saukuru scored Fiji’s first try of the second half, which Tabakaucoro successfully converted.

Just before the final whistle, Matakaiongo of Tonga converted a penalty.

Next up for Fiji is a matchup with Moana Pasifika on Saturday at 2pm.
