Sunderland are ‘likely’ to have already made one decision in search for next manager

What Carlton Palmer believes Sunderland is “likely” to do in its pursuit of a new manager has been made clear.

More than a week has passed since Sunderland fired Michael Beale and named Mike Dodds their temporary head coach for the remainder of the campaign.

Just two months prior, the Black Cats had already spent weeks selecting their previous manager after being linked to players like Will Still and Kim Hellberg.

But it turned out that their choice was incorrect, and Sunderland are now unprepared to face the hassle of having to recruit a permanent manager for the second time this season.

Rather, they intend to bide their time until the summer, allowing ample opportunity to choose the ideal candidate capable of guiding them back to the Premier League.

Several names have already been thrown into the hat, including Roy Keane, Steve Cooper, and former Sunderland manager Alex Neil.

But former midfielder Carlton Palmer has swiftly put an end to any discussion of Sunderland signing one of those well-known English names, asserting that the club is “likely” to seek overseas.

“Mike Dodds is well thought of by the backroom staff and by the hierarchy at Sunderland, and they don’t want to lose him, so they’re giving him every opportunity,” he said in an interview with Football League World.

“Of course his name will be considered if he continues to produce strong results through the end of the season.

However, I believe it’s quite improbable that Mike Dodds will take over as Sunderland’s manager.

“I believe Sunderland may be holding off on approaching the manager they have their eye on until the conclusion of the season.

“I believe it to be a foreign coach.”

Now, who will Sunderland be looking at?
Despite having made it apparent in the past that they intended to search throughout Europe, Sunderland hasn’t actually been connected to too many foreign managers thus far.

Will Still was strongly linked to the Black Cats prior to Christmas, and he appears to be among their most likely choices once again.

The 31-year-old has already acknowledged that he would be open to joining a Championship team, and he makes a ton of sense if Sunderland is willing to cover the transfer money.

Although Sunderland supporters are accustomed to getting to know their new managers really well and are generally unimpressed, it would be uncharted terrain for us to bring in a young, inexperienced coach. Since we haven’t truly tried it before, it is undoubtedly a risk worth taking.
