‘Underachiever’ could solve Celtic’s no.1 Problem

JENJI SIEGRIT is at risk of going down as one of the all-time great underachievers in football.

The big Celtic stand-by keeper has fallen to third in Brendan Rodgers’ matchday squad hierarchy and hasn’t played for the first team this season.

Since Joe Hart, an England international with 75 caps, was suspended for the Premiership match against Motherwell in September of last year, Joe Hart has been a mainstay at No. 1. Matt O’Riley’s stoppage-time goal was necessary to secure the points in a thrilling 2-1 victory. Scott Bain was chosen to fill in for Hart.

The veteran goalie was forced to sit it out following his absurd red card in the 3-0 victory against Livingston in West Lothian the week before, as CQN reported. He announced his retirement yesterday.

The closest Siegrist, who turned 32 last month, to the action was a spot on the bench for substitutes at Fir Park the last time out.

With 16 months remaining on his Parkhead contract, the Swiss goalie was signed by Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2022 after his Dundee United contract expired.

With Hart resigning when the current campaign comes to an end on May 25, the famous day of the Scottish Cup Final, speculation over who will succeed him is already intense.

But the solution might already be within the ranks of the champions.

Siegrist, who has only played in two League Cups since moving to Glasgow, was a standout player at Tannadice and hasn’t let anyone down in his two trips to Celtic since Rodgers joined the team in June.

Before the transfer fell through after negotiations, it appeared as though he was on his way to Austria in January as part of a loan switch to Sturm Graz.

The player may withdraw from the first team for various reasons, but there’s no denying the 6-foot+ guardian possesses the all-around skill and talent to make the team second-guess paying a hefty price for Hart’s long-term replacement.

Literally, Siegrist controls his own destiny.
