Jim White and Martin Keown react to Rangers Europa League draw live on talk SPORT
While White suggested that it could have been worse for the Light Blues, Keown has remained more cautious, especially after Porto managed to pull off a Champions League upset against Arsenal. Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (23 February, 11:23) he said: “Rangers against Benfica looks a bit tough, Benfica are top of the Portuguese league and we’ve just seen what Porto did to Arsenal. While Benfica are having an impressive season, they are certainly a side that Rangers are more than capable of beating, especially if the Light Blues play to the standard that they have shown they can in recent weeks under Clement.
While the Gers’ domestic form under the Belgian’s management has earned them plenty of praise, they impressed in the Europa League following Clement’s arrival, particularly in their remarkable away win over Real Betis to book their place in the last-16. It won’t be easy for Rangers, but if they have genuine aspirations of going far in this year’s tournament and pushing for a treble or even quadruple this term, they are going to have to show that they can beat the biggest teams they face. Hopefully, Clement and the Ibrox crowd can continue to work their magic and propel the Gers into the last eight. If they can get that far, who knows what they’ll be able to achieve between now and the end of the season.
