The winger is making an impression in the West Midlands; last week, against Cardiff City, he scored inside 30 seconds of making his professional debut. Cedric Kipre, a former Motherwell cult hero, handed the Baggies a second-half lead last night against Plymouth Argyle, and the Celtic loanee made headlines once again.

After leading an independent counterattack, Johnston exchanged passes with Alex Mowatt and advanced from the left. He curled a beauty past his former Celtic colleague Conor Hazard, leaving his marker on the ground with a shimmy that one punter on X described as “Messi-esque.” On the West Brom teamsheet, he was identified as “Mickey Johnston,” but if he maintains up this pace, you have a feeling they won’t be mispronouncing his name for very long.

Tony Brown, a West Brom great, said on BBC Radio WM after seeing the goal: “What a corker.” What a fantastic hit.

“He’s executed every move well; he entered the box, controlled it with his right foot, and unleashed an incredible strike that found its way into the upper corner. The Plymouth goalie had no chance. Johnston’s play was outstanding, really outstanding. Incredible.
