Graeme Souness has revealed that his major concern around Philippe Clement when he was linked with the Rangers job was how he would handle managing an Old Firm club.

The Rangers legend confessed that, although Clement dealt well with his questioning during the interviewing process, managing one of the Old Firm sides brings different challenges.

Souness did, however, share his view that the Rangers boss has handled the expectations and attitudes at Ibrox well in his sort period since taking over.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [19 February], Souness shared: “My major concern, I mean, he interviewed brilliantly. I was part of the interviewing process and I was firing some difficult questions at him, but he’s got presence, and his English is very, very good.

“He’s got a great CV, but the one doubt I had was that managing in the West of Scotland and managing one of the Old Firm teams brings its own challenges, but he’s handling it.”

Souness later went on to explain: “He’s done well in Belgium,
then going to Southern France with Monaco. But no job in football prepares you for the West of Scotland.”

Philippe Clement could win Rangers the SPFL title

Since arriving at Ibrox, the boss has recorded an impressive run of results which have catapulted the club to the top of the league, overtaking Celtic in the process, and has received high praise for the way he handles things on and off the pitch.

Even Chris Sutton has spoken highly of the boss, suggesting that Celtic should take a leaf out of his book in the manner he is going about the current SPFL title race.

Philippe Clement has been widely praised for his work at Rangers since replacing Michael Beale at Ibrox.
Given how close the title race is proving to be this season, the choice for Rangers to bring in Clement ahead of the likes of Frank Lampard, who had been linked with the job, is proving a master-stroke from the decision-makers.

This title race could go down to the wire, and Clement will be the man to take the acclaim should Rangers pull off the unexpected feat and land themselves with a victory come the end of the season.
