The debrief: Rangers-Celtic title momentum

The debrief: Rangers-Celtic title momentum, can anyone stop Falkirk, Lewis Ferguson and Bologna

Rangers are favored when it comes to titles.

Rangers are in the best position of the season after their performances over the weekend, but it is far too early to declare who will win one of the closest Premiership title races in years. After a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock on Saturday, Philippe Clement’s team had a chance to lead St Johnstone by two points on Sunday, and they took advantage of the opportunity, winning 3-0 at McDiarmid Park. There is no denying that this is a pivotal point in the season for the exuberant Rangers supporters who cheered for their club in Perth. They sang, “We shall not be moved.” Although the Ibrox team has the momentum right now, Celtic should not be written off despite their recent decline in performance.

Aberdeen and Hibs are still having trouble.

St Johnstone's Liam Gordon and Rangers' Cyriel Dessers get shirty at McDiarmid Park.
The biggest banker of the weekend was probably the draw between Aberdeen and Hibs. Both teams have similar records and are in the bottom half of the league. If they keep playing the same defensive style as they did in the 2-2 draw at Pittodrie, they will finish there after the split. Next week’s loss is unaffordable for any team: The Dons are at Kilmarnock in fourth position, while the Hibs are at home against sixth-place Dundee, who lead them by five points. Neil Warnock, their acting manager, has yet to secure a league victory.

Livingston way of life
After a league game, David Martindale could finally enjoy his weekend as Livingston defeated St. Mirren 1-0 in Paisley to win for the first time in 17 games. When they play Ross County in Dingwall the following weekend, the Lions, who are now at the bottom of the table, will only be three points behind them. Next weekend, Livingston is expected to bring new life to the Highlands, and a win would keep St Johnstone in tenth place within striking reach while also further sinking County.

Is there a way to halt Falkirk?

This season, John McGlynn is still doing a fantastic job at Falkirk. The Bairns, who hold the only unblemished record in the senior divisions of both Scotland and England, tightened their hold on the League One championship this past weekend with a 3-2 victory over their closest rivals, Hamilton Accies. With a game remaining, they lead by 11 points at the top. Although Falkirk has endured a difficult season or two for their supporters, this is undoubtedly their year. Can they win every game during the league season? That is the question.

The Fergie era in Bologna

Lewis Ferguson is having an amazing time at Bologna right now. The Scotland midfielder, who is presently the team’s captain, led the Rossoblu to a 2-1 victory away at Lazio as they maintained their pursuit for a top-four Serie A result. Bologna is now tied for the final Champions League slot with Atalanta in fourth place, having equal points. It would be interesting to watch if Ferguson, who has been connected to a lucrative summer transfer, can push his way into the Scotland squad for the friendly against Northern Ireland and the Netherlands the following month.
