Forgotten Sunderland man now ‘back in training’, he’s not been seen in over a year – journalist

A good injury update has been given to Sunderland ahead of the final stretch.

Since Sunderland’s return to the Championship prior to the previous season, injuries have been a recurring theme.

At one point, Tony Mowbray was really struggling due to a series of injuries and Ross Stewart’s primary absence due to injury.

Even though the Black Cats have a stronger roster this time around, Michael Beale still has a number of injured players on his roster.

However, Corry Evans is a player who hasn’t been seen in more than a year.

The Northern Irishman was instrumental in the club’s promotion from League One and the first half of the 2022–2023 season, but he has been out of commission since the beginning of last year due to an ACL injury.

Corry Evans resumes his playing career
Evans, 33, was supposed to have a contract expire at the end of the previous campaign, but the team gave him a one-year extension while he prepared to play again.

And it’s now known that the 69-cap Northern Ireland international has resumed training, albeit initially with the U21s, as his time at Sunderland draws to a conclusion.

Evans’ possible return to Sunderland could force the club to make a choice.

Evans is in a really difficult position.

Fans adore him, and prior to his injury, he was an important member of the team, captaining it and giving a youthful squad some much-needed experience.

Evans looks to be far older than the kind of player the Sunderland club wants, but the owners of the team have a history of being quite cruel to players who turn a certain age.

Evans’s release from the Black Cats during his recuperation period was a wise decision. It would be wonderful for all parties if Evans could play one more game before the summer.

However, Evans is expected to depart as a free agent in the summer based on all indications.

For Evans, though, it will be the beginning of a new chapter. He still has a wealth of experience, and many teams in League One or the second division would be lucky to have him if he can fully recover from injury.

Tomorrow, Sunderland’s next game in the Championship is against Huddersfield Town, who are currently in 21st place. A victory for Beale’s team might move them up to 5th place, contingent on the outcomes for Coventry City and West Brom.
