Blues consortium’s Justin Rees and Tom Lawrence invited to 10 Downing Street

This week, at a celebration honouring sports heroes, Southend United consortium members Justin Rees and Tom Lawrence were welcomed to the Prime Minister’s office. On Tuesday, Anna Firth, the Conservative MP for Southend West, welcomed Blues CEO Lawrence, who recently joined the team, and the Australian billionaire leading the consortium to 10 Downing Street.

Days before Christmas, contracts for the takeover were eventually exchanged, ending months of uncertainty at Southend United. According to Ms. Firth, it was only fitting that two of the major players involved be given this exceptional chance.

“I was truly delighted to welcome Justin and Tom to Westminster and to have the chance to take them to one of the most recognisable buildings in the country, 10 Downing Street,” she stated.

“Tom and Justin instantly came to mind for the celebration of local sports stars. Tom has played a crucial role in maintaining the club’s daily operations and has likely had one of the most difficult jobs in sport for the past 18 months.

“Despite being the consortium’s main public face, Justin had the difficult chore of uniting them all, and he has been working tirelessly to see the project through to its conclusion.

“Like all fans, I hope we can finally draw a line under this dark chapter in the club’s history and move on to bigger, brighter and better things as soon as possible.”

The consortium members were addressed by Lucy Frazer, the Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport, who was also in attendance.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to Anna Firth for her invitation,” Mr. Rees continued. Having the chance to visit a location as famous and significant as 10 Downing Street was amazing.

“Once the takeover is finalised, I look forward to working with Anna again to ensure the views of the club and most importantly, the fans, are properly represented in the Football Governance Bill.”

Firth is currently pushing for a meeting between the Shrimpers Trust and ministers and is continuing to put pressure on the Government to introduce the promised bill.
