7-figure Sunderland transfer now ‘agreed’, medical booked today

With the arrival of Leo Hjelde and the impending signing of Romaine Mundle, Sunderland appears to be having a successful end to the January transfer window. The 20-year-old former Spurs player is currently at Standard Liege in Belgium, but Fabrizio Romano disclosed last night that Sunderland have reached an agreement to buy him.

According to Keith Downie, the 20-year-old is currently en route to Wearside for a medical examination in anticipation of a £2 million move.

They successfully completed the signing of Hjelde, their first acquisition of January, and they have virtually witnessed Alex Pritchard’s transfer to Birmingham City.

The team has now moved quickly to move a Mundle agreement over the finish line.

According to Sky Sports reporter Downie, Mundle is currently traveling to England to complete his medical at Sunderland. He also said that the Black Cats are paying £2 million for his services.
Mundle is expected to become Michael Beale’s second Sunderland acquisition as manager, and the 43-year-old, who is now under criticism, will undoubtedly be happy with his team’s tardy action in the transfer market this month.

Beale’s encouraging 3-1 victory over Stoke City in the Championship last time out helped to release some of the strain on his shoulders.

With Coventry City in sixth position and Sunderland in seventh, both teams were tied on points but trailed by goal differential.

For Sunderland, the last several weeks have not been easy due to the management change, the criticism, and the lack of movement in January transfers thus far.

However, the £2 million that Sunderland’s owners paid for Mundle is indicative of their continued desire.

Given that Sunderland is a team that doesn’t frequently spend this much money on players, the club would have done their research on Mundle and must undoubtedly be confident in his talent and future potential.

Mundle could be seen as Jack Clarke’s long-term replacement because he joins at a time when the former is strongly suspected of leaving.

After a difficult couple of years for the former Spurs player, Mundle will need to be eased back into the first team and into Championship games in the second half of the season. He has large shoes to fill, though.

This weekend, Sunderland will play Middlesbrough in the Championship.
