Rangers target could be sold for just £2.5m as club face financial problem

While the links surrounding one of Dutch football’s most versatile operators have grown cold in recent weeks, things are certainly heating up again ahead of Thursday’s deadline, Vitesse’s monetary issues turning the hob up to six. According to Algemeen Dagblad, Vitesse need to raise around five million euros to ease their precarious position. And it just so happens that Manhoef may be their best source of funds, the all-action midfielder the most sellable asset in a squad short on quality. The appointment of former PSV Eindhoven chief Nils Koppen as the club’s director of football has sparked rumours linking a host of Eredivisie talents with a mid-season move to Ibrox, including FC Twente’s Gijs Smal and PSV’s own Fredrik Oppegard. Manhoef, meanwhile, will likely to be allowed to go if the price is right. Vitesse are holding out for around £2.5 million but could be convinced to accept less, due to the rather desperate financial situation they find themselves in.

Links have gone quiet Though whether a move to Ibrox is still on the cards for Manhoef is another matter. This all-action, Swiss Army Knife of a footballer has filled about every position on the pitch in the last few seasons but is arguably at his most effective on the right wing. Rangers, however, appear to be closing in on Lens youngster Oscar Cortes, who could be an option for that right-sided spot alongside rising star Ross McCausland, even if prefers to cut in from the left. Rangers have already signed Mohamed Diomande from Nordsjaelland and Wolves striker Fabio Silva, who himself had a spell in the Netherlands with Koppen’s former employers PSV. Alongside Cortes, Philippe Clement’s side are reportedly closing in on Fluminense’s former Brazil youth left-back Jefte.
