Report claims Rangers could pay almost £6m to sign an ‘absolutely fantastic’ talent

Rangers could reportedly stump up near £6 million for Mohamed Diomande and the FC Nordsjaelland ace will have a sell-on clause included in his Ibrox contract.

Amid reports that an announcement is now ‘imminent’ – Rangers set to complete the signing of a 22-year-old midfielder who has impressed both Philippe Clement and recruitment chief Nils Koppen – further details are emerging about the nature of the deal which should see Mohamed Diomande become the club’s first permanent signing of 2024.

A number of publications have indicated that Rangers will pay £4 to £4.5 million for Diomande. Danish site Tispbladet, however, believe the eventual fee could be closer to £6 million.

£5.7 million to be precise.

Tipsbladet add that Nordsjaelland will insist on a sell-on clause in Diomande’s contract. As such, if the Ivory Coast under-21 international impresses in Scotland and earns himself a mega-money switch to a more deep-pocketed club later down the line – a la Nathan Patterson or Calvin Bassey – Nordsjaelland will receive a substantial windfall.

A graduate of the same ‘Right to Dream’ academy which honed the talents of West Ham’s Mohamed Kudus before he also made his name in Denmark, Nordsjaelland are set to lose a player who has been labelled one of the finest midfielders in the division by head coach Johan Thorup.

As Tipsbladet point out, however, FCN would rather sell Diomande to Rangers now than risk lose him to their American-based sister club San Diego FC in 2025, potentially for a far lower fee.

‘Absolutely fantastic’

“Instead of talking about his scoring statistics, why don’t we look at the statistics about how many defensive tackles he makes?,” Thorup said, arguing that Diomande’s ball-winning prowess offsets his lack of goals, even if he does have five assists to his name this season.

“Then, it would be turned into a positive story.

“Listen, Mohammed is one of the best midfielders in Denmark. He has been absolutely fantastic for us this season and I hope that most people can see that.”

Diomande joins Wolves loanee Fabio Silva at Ibrox. Funds permitting, Rangers could still look to bring in a forward to replace the ‘long-term’ absentee Ibrahima Sima. A left-back may be required too if Ridvan Yilmaz joins Galatasaray.
