Rangers are considering surprise Cyriel Dessers exit deal in January

Rangers may have to sell the likes of Cyriel Dessers before they can start to sign players in the vein of Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland for the Gers, as transfer insider Dean Jones provides GIVEMESPORT with an internal allegation he’s been presented with from Ibrox.

Since being appointed head coach of Rangers in October 2023, Philippe Clement has had a stellar start to life in Glasgow and intends to contend for the Scottish Premiership title.

The Germans have also guaranteed their place in the Europa League’s round of 16, having defeated a formidable group that contained Real Betis of La Liga and Sparta Prague of the Czech Republic. To compete on three fronts for the balance of the 2023–2024 season, Rangers may take advantage of the winter transfer window in 2024.

Rangers problems for Cyriel Dessers
After letting go of many of their more seasoned players in the summer transfer window of 2023, Rangers needed a total overhaul at Ibrox. In an attempt to challenge domestic triple holders Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership this season, the Gers added nine players to their roster throughout the market.

Cyriel Dessers, who cost £4.5 million to bring from Cremonese to Ibrox, was one of those acquisitions. In 32 appearances during the 2022–2023 season, the 29-year-old had ten goals and three assists, but he aimed to reach new heights in the Scottish Premiership.

However, Dessers has found it difficult to adjust to life in Scotland and has only scored six goals in his 17 Premier League games. So, should any approaches be made, Rangers may try to figure out how to get the four-cap Nigerian international out of Ibrox.

The Gers may be allowed to pursue signing Hearts center-forward Shankland if Dessers is sold. Rangers are reportedly negotiating a contract to sign the 28-year-old Scotland international after their initial effort to sign Fenerbahce No. 9 Michy Batshuayi failed, according to Football Insider. Shankland, who now leads the Scottish Premiership in goals scored with 13, is also believed to be sincere about moving to Ibrox.

Jones stated to GIVEMESPORT last month (December 24, 2023) that the Hearts player had ignited the rumors by showing support for a Rangers social media post. After clinching the loan acquisition of Wolverhampton Wanderers center-forward Fabio Silva until the conclusion of the 2023–24 season, the Glasgow giants have already made their first acquisition of 2024.Football Transfer Update: Rangers confirm Dessers' arrivalDean Jones: Rangers might need to sell before making a purchase

According to Jones, he has contacts at Rangers who have informed him that players will need to depart the team in order for additions to be made. The transfer insider cited Dessers’s possible departure as an example to justify Shankland’s signing. Smith stated to GIVEMESPORT:

There’s been a lot of discussion regarding the new hires, which is positive in my opinion. Even though it will be a hectic period, I believe they are attempting to strike a balance in terms of the players who will be departing the squad at the same time. Let’s use Rangers’ target player Shankland as an example. They like him, and there’s definitely some curiosity there. However, sources close to Rangers claim that the issue stems from the fact that players must leave the team. They are open-minded about receiving proposals for Dessers as a player. That, in my opinion, will be crucial to attaining those goals.

Rangers’ interest in Owen Beck: a transfer updateOwen Beck to Celtic transfer faces Liverpool trap door as Dundee await FIFA trump card gift from Jurgen Klopp - Daily Record
Clement will be hoping that the Rangers board continues to support him for the next weeks of the market, as they have already made their first signing of the winter window. The Gers are now eight points behind Celtic, the leaders of the Scottish Premiership, but if they win their remaining games, they might cut that deficit to two points.

Rangers and Celtic are interested in taking on Liverpool left-back Owen Beck on loan, according to Football Scotland. Since December 2023, the Light Blues have indicated their intention to sign the talented Reds player. A transfer north of the border is contingent upon a number of circumstances at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has made it clear that he wants to keep Beck with the six-time European Cup champions while Kostas Tsimikas and Andrew Robertson recover from their injuries. The 21-year-old, who played for two teams in the 2023–24 season following an outstanding loan term at Dundee, will not be permitted to leave the club if he makes an appearance for Liverpool before the end of the winter market.

In an attempt to build on their victory in the Viaplay Cup earlier in the season, Rangers will make their Scottish Cup return trip to Dumbarton on January 20. Then, as they pursue Celtic at the top of the table, the Gers get back into Premiership action before the end of the month when they visit Hibernian and St. Mirren.
