The sad story behind yesterday’s Celtic Supporters Association photograph

Mike sent out a brief update late last night (Celtic Park time) and asked that everyone who kindly replied to our request be thanked. The man with the amazing mustache, Mike, takes center stage in this picture as he shakes hands with Jim Brodie from CSA.

The sad tale of the man who was also from NZCSC and who was the driving force behind both Mike and Jim is the main focus of the update.

Mike clarified, “A member of the NZCSC who was also over at that time is to my immediate left.” “I cannot recall his full name – he was also referred to as Jock.

“I didn’t know at the time that he had a fatal illness and was occasionally in excruciating agony, but his visit was also his way of saying farewell to friends and family. He had been in New Zealand for a long time, but I believe he was drinking in the Smiddy in Partick.
He got back to Auckland around a week ahead of me. I was perplexed at the time as to why he did not stick around for the Scottish Cup Final against Dundee United.

“Jock passed away the day following the Cup victory, a member who was a close friend of Jock’s informed me when I eventually made it back. Jock called his friend to inquire on the score because there was no internet or satellite service available back then. “At least I can die happy,” he said with his final breath.

Chic Doherty is a Bellshill resident who is pictured standing far to the left in the image. He served for several years as the NZCSC delegate. He had a strong commitment to all things Celtic. Despite not being a driver, he never missed an Association meeting and would send us a letter with his thoughts and the minutes from the meeting as soon as he got back to New Zealand.
