Rangers open preliminary talks to sign 21-yr-old

Josh Doig, a left back for Hellas Verona, is reportedly close to joining Rangers this month, according to sources who spoke to Football Insider.

It is thought that the Gers prioritized a left-back in January and are keen to add a player who can start right away to strengthen this position.

Football Insider was informed by sources that Philippe Clement’s team has been keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old Scotsman while he is in Serie A.

The team hopes to make headway over the coming week and could have even started preliminary negotiations regarding a deal for Doig.

Numerous European teams, including Marseille, Torino, and Udinese, are apparently interested in signing Doig, but Rangers are still in the running to get him.

This season, he has made 13 appearances for the Italian team, where manager Marco Baroni has used him at left-back and left-midfield.
Following 78 appearances at Easter Road, Hibernian received a reported £3 million from Hellas Verona in the summer of 2022.

The uncertainty surrounding the futures of the Gers’ present left-back choices, Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz, is what has spurred the team to activity this month.

Football Insider (10 January) reported that Hellas Verona is making headway in their pursuit of Yilmaz, with both loan and permanent moves being considered.

Barisic has entered the final six months of his contract at Ibrox and is apparently attracting a lot of interest from around Europe.
Rangers, who still have two games remaining, are eight points behind Celtic in second place in the league.

The following January 20, following the winter break, they take on Dumbarton in the Scottish Cup.
