Rangers likely to sell multi-million signing permanently in summer after Jan deal done

The newspaper reported on the back page of its print edition (11 January) that Lammers has a contract in Glasgow until 2027, and is due to return to Ibrox in the summer after his loan spell in the Netherlands comes to an end, although it is “likely” that the Gers will look to make his exit permanent.

Lammers was brought to the club by former boss Michael Beale in a £3million deal from Serie A side Atalanta in the summer (Sky Sports News, 16 June 2023) but the Dutchman has found life difficult in Scotland, scoring just twice in 31 games for the Light Blues.

Following Phillipe Clement’s arrival, the 26-year-old started the first six games of the Belgian’s reign but struggled to impress and has seen his game time limited since.

No future

Sometimes you can tell when things aren’t going to work out for a player at a club, and that is certainly the case for Lammers at Rangers.

Heading back to his native country will likely do the player a lot of good on a personal level, and could inspire some form in the second half of the season as he returns to familiar surroundings, but it is unlikely to do much in the way of saving his Rangers career.

Two goals in 31 appearances simply isn’t good enough for a player of Lammers’ experience, and he will perhaps be keen to seal a permanent exit himself after enduring a difficult time at Ibrox.

Clement will have very little interest in what Lammers can offer FC Utrecht for the rest of the season, as what he has shown in a Rangers shirt hasn’t been good enough.

The loan was likely just seen as a stopgap move until there is more time to find a permanent solution in the summer, and it is hard to imagine either party will be too sad to bring their unsuccessful relationship to a close.
