Reported Rangers and Celtic target has already swore allegiance to one side of Old Firm

Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna has previously revealed he grew up a Celtic fan as links to Rangers continue in the press.

Both sides of the Old Firm have been linked with a move for Scotland international centre-back McKenna, 27, who finds himself out of favour at the City Ground.

With Celtic having already ruled themselves out of the running to journalists, Rangers are the Scottish club who now look most likely to sign the ex-Aberdeen star.

But comments Scott McKenna made about his Celtic fan father might be of interest to Rangers supporters as the transfer reports continue this January.

Speaking in an interview with the Scotsman back in February 2020, Scott McKenna laid bare his allegiances to the green and white side of Glasgow.

Then turning out for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, this was also just a few months on from when the defender was reportedly subject to a £5m bid from his boyhood team.

“My dad was a Celtic season-ticket holder,” says McKenna. “I went to a few Celtic games round the time when they were doing well in Europe.

“I remember being there when Alan Thompson scored versus Barcelona. I used to love going to a midweek game at Parkhead under the lights.

“Of course, when you play against Celtic for Aberdeen I want Aberdeen to win. When you become a professional and it’s your job, supporting Celtic goes out the window. You play for Aberdeen, you want the best for Aberdeen.”

We wonder if the defender might say the same thing should those Rangers transfer links be realised this winter.

Rangers alarm bells ring over defender

Ibrox fans might have a few alarm bells ringing in their heads in lieu of these quotes, with the club not exactly having a good time with Celtic fan players in their squad as of late.

Over the years fans of both sides of the Old Firm have turned out for the opposing team but with Rangers’ struggles as of late the Ibrox side has drawn the short straw with some questionable characters.

The stand-out is £450k signing from St Johnstone Michael O’Halloran, who was an abomination in the blue of Rangers before being spotted in the crowd at a Celtic match in 2018 whilst still on the books at Ibrox.

Rangers Academy graduate Liam Burt also goaded Ibrox fans after moving to Celtic, a switch which turned out disastrously for the playmaker.

There’s a sentiment that Celtic fans and Rangers just don’t go at the moment and these historic Scott McKenna comments will not go down well in Ibrox circles.

Philippe Clement may well also want to avoid any drama by looking elsewhere whilst McKenna does reportedly have other options.

The centre-back also returned to the Nottingham Forest squad for the first time in four months this weekend.
